Saleable coal, the product that leaves the mine gate.

Two states produce 99 per cent of Australia's coal

Australia produced 411 million tonnes of saleable coal in the twelve months to 2026 Q1. The state breakdown is published two quarters behind that: over the twelve months to 2025 Q3, Queensland accounted for 227.7 million tonnes and New South Wales 175.0 million tonnes, together 99 per cent of the 408 million tonnes produced in that window. Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania contribute under 5 million tonnes between them, nearly all of it used within Australia.

Output

Raw coal is what comes out of the ground; saleable is what survives washing.

About 78 tonnes in every hundred mined is sold

Australian mines raised 527 million tonnes of raw coal in the twelve months to 2026 Q1 and sold 411 million tonnes of it, a yield of 78 per cent. The remainder is rock, ash and moisture removed at the washplant.

Rejects and losses are raw output less saleable output. That difference covers washplant rejects and moisture, and is not a measure of waste alone.

Coal earned Australia A$63.0 billion last year

Export earnings over the twelve months to 2026 Q1 were A$63.0 billion. In the most recent quarter high quality metallurgical coal averaged A$281 a tonne and thermal coal A$136 a tonne, which is why metallurgical coal earns far more than its tonnage share suggests.

Two sources

The federal and Queensland figures do not agree, and the reason is in the footnotes.

Two official sources, two different Queenslands

The federal Resources and Energy Quarterly and the Queensland department both publish Queensland's saleable coal production, and they rarely agree. Across 63 overlapping quarters the two match exactly in only 8. Among the rest the federal figure runs a median 1.8 per cent above the state's, and the gap has reached +21.0 per cent in a single quarter and -6.2 per cent the other way. Neither is wrong: the federal series is an estimate, the state's is compiled from returns lodged by each mine.

Queensland saleable coal: federal estimate against state returns

million tonnes per quarter
Mean gap 3.7 per cent across every quarter, 4.2 per cent among those that actually differ. The widest was 2021 Q4, where the federal estimate sat 21.0 per cent above the state's return. If you need Queensland at mine level, or the most recent quarter, use the Queensland page, which is built from the state returns and runs two quarters further forward.

Common questions

How much coal does Australia produce?

Australia produced 411 million tonnes of saleable coal in the twelve months to 2026 Q1, from 527 million tonnes of raw coal mined.

Which Australian state produces the most coal?

Queensland, at 227.7 million tonnes of saleable coal against New South Wales on 175.0 million tonnes over the twelve months to 2025 Q3. Together they are 99 per cent of national output.

How much coal does Australia export?

355 million tonnes over the twelve months to 2026 Q1, of which 147 million tonnes was metallurgical coal and 209 million tonnes thermal coal.

What is Australian coal worth?

A$63.0 billion in export earnings over the twelve months to 2026 Q1.

Who buys Australian coal?

The largest named destinations are Japan (106.1 million tonnes), China (72.7 million tonnes), India (39.1 million tonnes), South Korea (27.4 million tonnes), Taiwan (23.0 million tonnes).

How much of Australia's coal comes from open cut mines?

84 per cent. Open cut mines produced 342 million tonnes against 65 million tonnes underground over the twelve months to 2025 Q3.

Does Australia produce brown coal?

Yes, in Victoria's Latrobe Valley. It is a separate resource: wetter, lower in energy, consumed in nearby power stations and never exported. It is reported separately from the series on this page, which is why Victoria shows no production here.

Method

Where this comes from, and what it can't tell you

Source. Every figure is compiled from the historical data workbook of the Resources and Energy Quarterly, published by the Office of the Chief Economist at the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources, under CC BY 4.0. Nothing here is modelled or forecast: the REQ also publishes projections, and none of them appear on this page.

Two different currencies in one table. The national total runs to 2026 Q1 while the state and mine-type splits stop at 2025 Q3. Charts and figures on this page therefore use each series' own most recent four complete quarters rather than one shared window, which is why the state figures do not sum exactly to the national total.

State figures are estimates. The REQ marks its state and mine-type rows with an estimate footnote. Where a state publishes its own figures compiled from mine returns, the two will not match. That is the subject of the comparison above rather than a fault in either source.

What this covers. These series count the coal Australia mines for steelmaking and for export power markets. Victoria's brown coal is a separate resource, wetter and lower in energy, consumed in nearby power stations and never exported; it is reported elsewhere and does not appear here. Victoria therefore shows no production on this page, which is correct rather than missing.

No mine-level detail. The REQ reports to state level. Only Queensland publishes production for every individual mine, which is why the Queensland page can go deeper than this one.

Destinations are partial. The REQ names only the major buyers for each grade and withholds some country detail as confidential. Destination rows therefore do not sum to the export total, and the gap is genuine rather than an error.

Revisions. The most recent quarter is preliminary and moves as data is resubmitted. This page is rebuilt from the source workbook after each quarterly edition rather than updated by hand.
