Gold content of all minerals produced. Every state and territory is published, so nothing hides in the national figure.

Western Australia produces 71 per cent of Australia's gold

Australia mined 329 tonnes of gold in the twelve months to 2026 Q1. Western Australia alone accounted for 235 tonnes of that, 71 per cent, a concentration no other Australian commodity matches. The Northern Territory was second on 33.1 tonnes and New South Wales third on 24.4 tonnes. Queensland produced 14.9 tonnes, South Australia 11.9, Victoria 6.3 and Tasmania 4.1. National output has risen 2 per cent over five years.

Gold production by state and territory

tonnes per quarter
Gold content of all minerals produced, tonnes per quarter, 1990 Q1 to 2026 Q1. Unlike the coal and copper tables, every producing state and territory is published separately here, the Northern Territory and Victoria included, so the bands are the whole of Australian production. They sum to the national total exactly in all but 23 of 145 quarters, where state and national figures were revised out of step; the largest such gap is 4.59 tonnes. Refining

Australia refines gold mined in other countries. That is a service business, and it is why a large exporter also imports bullion.

Australia refines gold for the rest of the world, not just its own

Australian refineries processed 292 tonnes of gold in the twelve months to 2025 Q3. 56 tonnes of that, 19 per cent, was gold mined overseas and shipped here to be refined — a service business rather than a mining one, and the reason Australia imports bullion at all. Cut a different way, 3.8 tonnes was secondary gold, meaning scrap recovered and re-refined rather than newly mined; the two cuts overlap, since 1.4 tonnes of that scrap also came from overseas. Over the same twelve months Australian mines produced 304 tonnes, so refinery throughput ran at 96 per cent of domestic mine output.

Refinery output by origin

tonnes per quarter
Refinery output by origin and type, tonnes per quarter. Primary gold comes from newly mined ore, secondary from scrap. These rows end at 2025 Q3, two quarters before the production and export figures elsewhere on this page, so the twelve-month totals above are drawn from different windows and are labelled accordingly. Exports

Refined and unrefined bullion together, which is how the department counts it.

Hong Kong is the largest single buyer of Australian gold

Gold exports totalled 235 tonnes in the twelve months to 2026 Q1. The largest destination was Hong Kong at 64 tonnes, 32 per cent of the named total, with the United Kingdom close behind on 61 tonnes. The trade is not simply an Asian one: the United Kingdom and the United States together take 44 per cent of named exports. Exports are counted as refined and unrefined bullion together, and the volume includes ash, waste and scrap gold, so it is not a clean measure of refined metal alone.

Gold earned Australia A$65.4 billion in a year

Refined gold exports were worth A$65.4 billion in the twelve months to 2026 Q1, against A$25.1 billion of bullion imported over the same period. Australia is a net exporter by a wide margin, but the import figure is not a curiosity: it is the raw material for the refining business above. In 2026 Q1 the London Bullion Market Association afternoon price averaged US$4,875 an ounce while Australian exports realised A$7,006 an ounce. The two are quoted in different currencies and the gap between them is mostly the exchange rate.

The LBMA price is US dollars an ounce and the realised Australian export price is Australian dollars an ounce, so the distance between the lines reflects the exchange rate as much as anything about the market. Exploration

Gold takes a larger share of Australian exploration spending than any other mineral.

Gold attracts A$1,764 million of exploration a year, more than any other mineral

Explorers spent A$1,764 million looking for gold in the twelve months to 2026 Q1, 46 per cent of all Australian spending on metals and minerals exploration — a larger share than any other commodity. Unlike the copper series, gold exploration is reported right back to 1990 Q1. That is the highest twelve-month total in the whole record: spending on gold exploration has never been greater than it is now.

Questions

The figures above, stated plainly.

Common questions

How much gold does Australia produce?

Australia mined 329 tonnes of gold in the twelve months to 2026 Q1, according to the federal Resources and Energy Quarterly.

Which Australian state produces the most gold?

Western Australia, by a wide margin: 235 tonnes in the twelve months to 2026 Q1, or 71 per cent of national output. The Northern Territory is second on 33.1 tonnes and New South Wales third on 24.4 tonnes.

Why does Australia import gold?

Because Australian refineries process gold mined overseas. Of the 292 tonnes refined in the twelve months to 2025 Q3, 56 tonnes was of overseas origin. The imported bullion is the raw material for that business, which is why a large gold exporter also imports A$25.1 billion of it.

How much gold does Australia refine?

292 tonnes in the twelve months to 2025 Q3, of which 3.8 tonnes was secondary gold recovered from scrap.

What are Australia's gold exports worth?

A$65.4 billion in the twelve months to 2026 Q1, for refined gold.

Where does Australian gold go?

The largest destination over the twelve months to 2026 Q1 was Hong Kong at 64 tonnes, followed by the United Kingdom on 61 tonnes. Some country detail is withheld as confidential, so named destinations do not sum to the export total.

How much is spent exploring for gold in Australia?

A$1,764 million in the twelve months to 2026 Q1, which is 46 per cent of all Australian metals and minerals exploration spending, more than any other commodity.

Can I download this data?

Yes. The full quarterly series is published as CSV and JSON, and the original workbook is linked in the sources below. Everything is CC BY 4.0.

Method

Where this comes from, and what it can't tell you

Source. Every figure is compiled from the historical data workbook of the Resources and Energy Quarterly, published by the Office of the Chief Economist at the Australian Government Department of Industry, Science and Resources, under CC BY 4.0. Nothing here is modelled or forecast: the REQ also publishes projections, and none of them appear on this page.

Every state and territory is published. Gold is the one commodity in this series with a complete geographic split. Sheet 27 of the workbook publishes New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory separately, alongside an Australian total, so nothing is hidden inside a national figure. That is not true of the copper page, where the Northern Territory has no row. The seven rows here sum to the national total in all but 23 of 145 quarters; in those the state estimates and the national figure were revised out of step, by up to 4.59 tonnes, and the discrepancy is the department's rather than an error in this compilation.

Two different windows. Refinery rows end at 2025 Q3 while production, exports and prices run to 2026 Q1. Twelve-month totals on this page are therefore drawn from different windows, and every figure says which window it belongs to. Where refinery throughput is compared with mine output, mine output is recomputed over the refinery's window so the two are on the same footing.

Export volume and export value are not the same quantity. Export volumes cover refined and unrefined gold together, and the department notes that the volume includes ash, waste and scrap gold. The figure is therefore a good measure of gold leaving the country and a poor measure of refined bullion alone. Export value, by contrast, is reported for refined gold only, so value and volume are not two views of the same quantity and dividing one by the other will not give a sensible price.

Two different currencies. The benchmark price is the London Bullion Market Association afternoon fix in US dollars an ounce. The realised price is what Australian exports actually fetched, in Australian dollars an ounce. Both are reproduced as published rather than converted, because converting would require picking an exchange rate the department did not use.

No mine-level detail. The REQ reports to state level. No Australian state publishes gold production mine by mine as open data, so there is no deeper cut available for this commodity.

Destinations are partial. The department names only the major buyers and withholds some country detail as confidential. Destination rows therefore do not sum to the export total, and the gap is genuine rather than an error.

Revisions. The most recent quarter is preliminary and moves as data is resubmitted. This page is rebuilt from the source workbook after each quarterly edition rather than updated by hand.
